Tea cocktails are fiercely popular and you know I love my tea so I’m taking Negroni Week on a detour through Southeast Asia with this Lemongrass Tea Negroni (Teagroni.)
You may or may not have noticed that I have nine flavors of tea-infused smoothies on this site to date. I also have more than my fair share of cocktails. So what took me so long to get into tea cocktails?
I have no idea. But I’m about to make up for lost time.
Legend has it that an adventurous and eccentric Florentine Count, Count Negroni, had this now-classic cocktail created for him at his favorite watering hole back in the early 1900s. He requested a stronger version of the popular-at-the-time Americano by replacing the soda water with gin. He and I would have been great friends.
His version caught on and the rest is history. Presto! The classic Negroni cocktail.
By incorporating lemongrass tea, I’ve transported the Count’s classic into the realm of today’s trendy tea cocktails. And, me being me, I’ve made up my own story to go along with it.
The Count was known to be a restless soul with an unending need for adventure. One such adventure took him to a small Island in Southeast Asia where he planned to shed his public persona and enjoy a low-profile existence on a remote shoreline.
But fate had other plans. Two days into his stay a terrible storm landed him, very badly injured, in the hospital.
When the Count regained consciousness, he was introduced to the young, beautiful nurse who was charged with taking care of him.
When he was released from the hospital, the two silent lovers wished each other well and went their separate ways. They could never be together. Why reveal his feelings and create a situation that had no chance for a happy ending?
He returned to Italy and that was that. Or so they thought.
One steamy summer night, a bright orange drink the likes of which she’d never seen before materialized at the young nurse’s dinner table along with a note which read
Forgive me for not revealing myself to you when I could have. I think of you every day because I owe you not only my health, but my heart. I’m a different man, a better man, for having loved you. As a symbol of the change you caused in me, I have incorporated the fragrant tea of your culture into the cocktail that bears my name. I wanted to share it with you because we taste extremely good together.
Love works in mysterious, and sometimes intoxicating, ways.
Why drink alone? I’m celebrating Imbibe Magazine’s Negroni Week with these awesome bloggers ~
