Oscar-Worthy Cocktails: Another Man’s Shoes

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Welcome to the first recipe in the Oscar-Worthy Cocktails Series. This fine Bourbon and Black Tea adult beverage is inspired by my all-time favorite classic film, To Kill A Mockingbird.

Part of the Oscar-Worthy Cocktails Series sponsored by Drizly.Disclosure: Many thanks to Drizly, an alcohol delivery service, for helping me kick off this Oscar-Worthy Cocktails Series by sponsoring Another Man’s Shoes. As always, ideas and opinions expressed in this post are my own. Thanks for supporting the brands and services that help keep this blog humming.

The Oscars are happening 27 days from today and it’s my mission to make sure we’re all drinking like stars on the Big Night.

The idea behind the Oscar-Worthy Cocktails series is that I combine my love of film with my love of alcohol, distill them down into a cocktail recipe that is also an homage to cinema and then, finally, release the recipes into cyberspace!

Another Man's Shoes | a bourbon and black tea cocktail inspired by To Kill A Mockingbird. Part of the Oscar-Worthy Cocktails Series sponsored by Drizly. This first cocktail has a bit of a Southern thang goin’ on because it’s inspired by my all-time favorite movie, To Kill A Mockingbird.

I’ve named this cocktail Another Man’s Shoes because, to me, that’s the heart of the film. Justice, civility, democracy. They all hinge on us being able to stand in another man’s shoes long enough to understand where he (or she) is coming from.

We don’t have to agree with their perspective. But we have to at least try to see it. As fellow human beings, we owe each other that much.

Part of the Oscar-Worthy Cocktails Series sponsored by Drizly. At the trial in To Kill a Mockingbird, the jury stayed out much longer than expected. Everyone thought it would be an open and shut case. Black man vs white woman. But Atticus got them to stand in Tom’s shoes, forcing them to grapple with the notion that their never-before-questioned way of life could be unjust.

Also, at the end of the film, Scout finally sees the mythologized neighborhood spook, Boo, as a real person. If you want to watch the scene, it’s right here. It gets me every time. As she’s looking at him you can see all the rumors and half-truths she’s heard about him slipping away. And, at the same time, the smile in Boo/Arthur’s eyes grows and grows because he is finally being seen.

And [ding dong] you should probably answer the door because that could be your alcohol calling.

That’s right. If you had ordered some Bulleit Bourbon from Drizly at the beginning of this post you’d have what you need to mix up one of these Oscar-Worthy cocktails within the next couple of hours.

That’s right. Alcohol. At your door. Just use their web site or their app to order as much (or as little) as you need and sit tight. Drizly is especially awesome right now cuz FEBRUARY!
